Post-Plassey Bengal: The Transfer of Power and the Evolution of the Politics of Division

On 23 June 1757, the defeat of Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah by the English East India Company at the Battle of Plassey marked the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Bengal. Historian Jadunath Sarkar regarded this event as the end of the medieval era, the beginning of the modern age, and the dawn of a new epoch. In contrast, historian Mohar Ali interpreted it as the defeat of the East by the West, and of Asia by Europe.

The Battle of Plassey can be understood from multiple historical perspectives, and its consequences were profound and far-reaching. To revisit and critically examine the Battle of Plassey and its aftermath, the Centre for Bengal Studies organized a panel discussion.
